Under the auspices of the CAS Center for Project Supervision and Evaluation, a panel of experts recently conducted a ex-post evaluation on a research project entitled "the electrical system for an electric vehicle." The appraisal is the first of its kind in project management at CAS.

    The ex-post evaluation is conducted four-and-half years after it was passed acceptance check since its completion in 2002 with emphasis on the effectiveness and sustainability of the project. Through such an examination, says Prof. CHEN Banqin, director of the Center, CAS leadership hopes find out if the original targets of the project have been reached, if the preset objectives are forward-looking or of strategic significance; if its follow-up research has scored breakthrough progress, and if its management has any unique traits.  Such a management practice is expected to offer valuable references for other projects as well as basis for its successive support, he notes.

    The project under appraisal was conduced by a research team led by Prof. WEN Xuhui at the CAS Institute of Electrical Engineering. It was officially initiated in May 1998 and finished in November 2002. Its objective is to develop a state-of-the art electrical system for an electric vehicle that meets the need of China's actual conditions. The four-and-half years of hard work lead to remarkable research results in various aspects, ranging from the optimization of the asynchronous motor and its vector-controlling system to permanent magnetic engine and its controls. According to experts, the feat opens new horizons for the technology's industrialization and expands the application scope of the new electricity-powered driving system to China's car-making industry.
